Spoiler-aware guide

Systems are explained directly. Story outcomes and late-game events are omitted unless clearly marked.

Decision 01

Choose the campaign rules before choosing a build

Difficulty, permadeath, and the Beskar Ironman-style option determine how forgiving the campaign will be. Cross-checked launch guidance warns that changing difficulty later can invalidate difficulty-related achievement progress, so decide whether this is a discovery run or a trophy run before committing.

New to tactics

Use the game's recommended normal setting, keep permadeath optional, and learn how AP, cover, assists, injuries, and advantage interact.

Genre veteran

Hard or higher provides a sharper opening. Keep manual saves unless you specifically want Beskar's single-save pressure.

Achievement run

Do not change difficulty casually. Keep a separate pre-campaign save and record the rule set you started with.

Irreversible-risk warning

Named operators drive story scenes, bonds, and side content. With permadeath enabled, a bad mission can remove more than a combat unit.

Decision 02

Build coverage, not a tier list

There are authored story operators and custom recruits from The Den terminal, including humanoids and Astromechs. Custom units can fill gaps or run Operations; named companions bring unique talents, bonds, and story content.

  1. Anchor: Hawks improves the rest of the deployed squad and can flex into the role your early roster lacks.
  2. Safety: Trick's self-recovery makes an early mistake less likely to collapse the mission.
  3. Reach: bring a reliable ranged answer so high cover and distant targets do not dictate every activation.
  4. Control or support: add displacement, healing, AP support, or advantage generation instead of a fourth damage-only unit.

Analysis: this is a role-coverage recommendation derived from the official talents and cross-checked class guidance, not an official “best team.”

Decision 03

Run a complete Den cycle

Talking to named companions can advance character arcs and reveal side quests. Cross-checked guides also recommend resolving available Operations before shopping, because the resources they return can change what you can afford.

Preflight

Ask five questions before launch

QuestionWhy it matters
Who can absorb a mistake?Durability and recovery prevent one critical hit from ending the objective.
Who reaches distant or elevated targets?A squad without range can be pinned by safe enemy positions.
Who creates or spends advantage?Ultimate timing is a team economy, not a single-character decision.
What breaks armor or crowds?Bosses, elites, and grouped droids demand different answers.
What is the extraction plan? The objective is not complete if the last operator cannot leave safely.
Turn sequence

Do not spend the first AP you can spend

  1. 1

    Read every activation

Identify enemies that can flank, suppress, displace, or finish a wounded operator.

  2. 2

    Map assist lines

Position the squad so multiple operators can contribute to the same priority target.

  3. 3

    Price the whole turn

Add attack, movement, ability, and escape costs before committing the first point.

  4. 4

    Use the cheap target intelligently

Simple droids can feed advantage or open a chain. Do not spend the entire squad on a low-value kill.

  5. 5

Leave a reserve when it changes risk

Banking one AP is valuable when it preserves a reaction or a safe reposition; it is not a ritual when the objective demands tempo.

Avoidable losses

Six mistakes to catch early

  • Do not pick difficulty for pride and discover the achievement consequence twenty hours later.
  • Do not field only damage dealers; every mission still needs movement, control, recovery, or AP support.
  • Do not skip companion conversations when returning to The Den.
  • Do not spend all AP before checking who is exposed to the next enemy activation.
  • Do not treat custom recruits as disposable if permadeath and injuries are active.
  • Do not apply an unverified launch workaround to your only save.
